WAEYC Public Policy Series: The Legacy of Love: Transforming Trauma into Advocacy in Early Childhood Education

Session Title:
The Legacy of Love: Transforming Trauma into Advocacy in Early Childhood Education

Description:
Kianna Lewis carries a legacy of activism, equity, and resilience that has shaped her life and her work. Drawing inspiration from her cousin, civil rights icon John Lewis, and her family’s history of standing up for equality, Kianna shares how her personal journey of overcoming trauma has become the foundation for her advocacy in Early Childhood Education.

In this session, Kianna will delve into the power of turning pain into purpose, exploring how transparency, intentionality, and love can transform individuals, families, and educational systems. Through her lived experiences, she will highlight the importance of trauma-informed practices, racial equity, and community empowerment in shaping the next generation.

Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of how their own stories can inspire change and actionable steps to create inclusive, living spaces where all children and families feel seen, valued, and empowered.
